Race Report from Ken and Hubba

Date: 24th June 2015 | Category: GORBA NEWS
Hi Everyone,

The following race report is courtesy of Ken and Hubba - Car 724, who represented the Club at the recent Bob Stansfield Milbrodale Mountain Classic Event held on the 13th and 14th of June, 2015.

THE BOB STANSFIELD MILBRODALE MOUNTAIN CLASSIC HAS BEEN RUN AND WON..

GORBA WAS REPRESENTED BY KEN AND HUBBA IN 724

DAY ONE

A LEISURELY DRIVE UP THE HUME TO GOULBURN AND AN OVER NIGHT STOP AT THE LILAC MOTEL.

DAY TWO

OFF TOWARDS SYDNEY AFTER BREKKY.
MISSING THE PEAK TRAFFIC WE TURNED OFF THE M7 AND HEADED UP THE INFAMOUS COLO PUTTY ROAD.
THIS PIECE OF ROAD APPROX 130KM LONG HAS CLAIMED 41 TRUCK DRIVERS OVER THE YEARS.
A MEMORIAL TO THOSE WHO PERISHED HAS BEEN BUILT AT MILBRODALE.
IT IS NOT A ROAD TO BE MESSED WITH.
REMEMBERING BACK TO ARMY DAYS IN HOLSWORTHY IT USUALLY TOOK 7-8 HRS IN THE OLD ACCO”S TO GET TO SINGLETON.
BY CAR ABOUT 2 HRS.

ARRIVING AT THE TRACK WE WERE GREETED BY MARION BAXTER EVENT SECRETARY WHO GUIDED US TO THE CAMPING AREA.
THE CAMPING AREA AND FACILITIES MUST GO CLOSE TO BEING THE BEST IN AUS OFFROADING.
PARK LIKE CAMPING AREAS SURROUNDED BY MOUNTAINS FAB SCENERY AND GREAT PERMANENT FACILITIES
A CREDIT TO HVORRA MEMBERS.
AFTER SETTING UP CAMP WE CHATTED TO SOME RACERS WE HAD MET AT CROOKWELL.
UNLOADED 724 AND HEADED OFF TO SCRUTINEERING AND PAPER WORK.
ONLY DRAMA MY BOOTS WERE DIRTY.
BIT MORE OF A CHAT AROUND THE FIRE THEN OFF TO BED.

SATURDAY
PROLOGUE RECON

PROLOGUE
BLITZED THE START “ACTUALLY BEAT THE GREEN LIGHT BY ABOUT 5 SECS “ CARRIED ON ANY WAY AND AFTER PENALTIES ADDED.
STARTED AT THE REAR OF THE RACE GRID.

RACE ONE

4 LAPS OF THE MEDIUM COURSE 11KM PER LAP.
NO DRAMAS FOR US.
HALF WAY AROUND THE FIRST LAP WE CAME UPON A PRANG.
DREW CORRCRAN IN HIS NEW 702 PAJERO “12 MONTHS WORK” HAD MISJUDGED A TRICKY CORNER AND ROLLED
THE REST OF THE HEAT WENT OK.
QUICK CHECK OF CAR SHOWED A POTENTIAL PROBLEM WITH THE FRONT SUSPENSION.
NOT ENOUGH TO STOP US YET.

SAT ARVO

RECON LONG COURSE.
ONE WORD WOW.
THE LONG COURSE WINDS UP AND DOWN STEEP ROCKY MOUNTAIN TRACKS ALONG NARROW RIDGE LINES WITH ALMOST SHEER DROPS.
DOWN INTO VALLEYS WITH ALMOST RAIN FORREST LIKE GROWTH CREEK CROSSINGS BEFORE OPENING OUT ONTO PADDOCKS AND REJOINING THE SHORT COURSE AND BACK TO THE FINISH.
FOR THOSE OF YOU OLD ENOUGH IT MADE THE ORIGINAL KEMPSEY TRACK LOOK REASONABLY EASY
WOW IT’S A GEM OF A TRACK.

SAT NIGHT
DINER IN THE BIG TENT AND THE TRIBUTE TO BOB WITH A NUMBER OF GUEST SPEAKERS, FILMS AND VIDEOS
GOOD NIGHT HAD BY ALL.

SUNDAY

RACE TWO

4 LAPS MEDIUM COURSE.
ALL OK TILL WE CHECKED OUR MINOR SUSPENSION PROBLEM IT HAD BECOME WORSE WITH THE POTENTIAL OF REAL DAMAGE.
TO TOP THINGS OFF OIL WAS RUNNING OUT OF THE BASH PLATE.
INVESTIGATION REVEALED THE FRONT ENGINE SEAL HAD KARKED IT AND WAS CHUCKING MOBIL1 EVERY WHERE
“GAME OVER”.
THE POTENTIAL FOR MAJOR DAMAGE WAS TO GREAT.

AFTER WITHDRAWING WE WATCHED SOME RACING THEN DECIDED TO LEAVE EARLY.
PACKED UP AND BACK TO GOULBURN FOR THE NIGHT.

MONDAY

EASY TRIP BACK HOME.
LUNCH AT THE HOLBROOK PIE SHOP.
UNLOADED AND PARKED 724 IN DISGRACE.
STILL HAD A GREAT TRIP.
