1. 07-07-2010 -: Sea Lake Mallee Rally 2010 Report

A large field of 77 cars entered the Sea Lake Mallee Rally this year (Queens Birthday long weekend in June). There were a number of entrants from Geelong as well as Geelong spectators.

Brian Kent and Adam Kent (295) prologued 2nd in class and also 14th outright. This was a great effort having them prologue 2nd in the Super 1650 class behind Ross Allan and the 1st GORBA car. Consistent times on Sunday saw them finishing in 28th place overall.

Travis and Gary Conrad (206) prologued 27th outright, and made a great start to Sunday’s racing. In their second lap they sustained a flat tyre, resulting in a slower lap (although it must have been a quick tyre change as they only lost around 7 minutes).

Jason Corless and Paul Ward (15) put on a great show for the crowd in the prologue; they were clocked by the police doing 178km's. Unfortunately following prologue and in preparation for race day the boys found a split in the fuel tank, which meant race over for the event proper.

David and Alice Middlemiss (277) finished the 2nd half of the event proper really strong after an eventful first couple of laps. The jury is still out on whether they were really stopping because of electrical issues or because Alice kept needing toilet breaks!

Andy and Karen Fox (705) have been working quite hard on the development of the Patrol and all went well in prologue. Sunday started with a close race off the line with Cameron & Jodie Lyne (272), however the two crews had a close encounter with one another nearing the 25km mark at the Saltworks. Looks like Andy might need to work on the endurance aspect of the Patrol after it decided to lay on its side for a nap during the first lap.

Andrew Stoddard and Chris Clarke (286) entered their outlaw buggy in their 1st long course Super 1650 event. A consistent effort in laps one and two saw them having a great run, unfortunately they had a couple of stops in the second session,  the first a broken axle which they fixed and continued racing. Unfortunately half a lap later their run finally came to end with gearbox problems.

Scott Richardson (24) is his Chenowth Pro-Class buggy prologued in 45th place. Scott finished the first 2 laps of the main race unfortunately succumbing to gearbox issues in the 3rd lap.

Darryl Pearce and Branden Pearce (2212) prologued in 58th place. Unfortunately they only finished one lap of the main track, succumbing to gearbox dramas in the 2nd.

We are sure that we can speak for everyone in saying that a great weekend was had by all in Sea Lake. Many thanks to the Sea Lake Club for another fantastic Mallee Rally.

2. 24-05-2010 -: Avalon Multi Club May 1

A small but quality field entered the Avalon Multi-club short course at the weekend. Peter Sibson won the event outright followed by David Middlemiss & Jason Munro (Jason double entered in Peter’s Class 4 Baja).
Greg Shaw brought out the Bennett Extreme 2wd truck for its first event after some long hours in the shed, finishing in the early hours of the race morning. The truck went well, finishing the 2nd, 3rd and 4th heats after a minor electrical drama in the first heat.
Car 412 completed a number of race km’s, double entered with both Peter Sibson & Jason Munro having a drive. The car did well to hold together and came through in 1st and 3rd place.
Ken Tocock & Nathan Hubbard pulled the Production 4wd out of the shed for its first race since Sunraysia in 2008. After the spiders and centipedes were cleaned out of the engine bay it raced well all day (with the assistance of a push start during a break).
Ron Taylor was having a good run, until in the 3rd heat a flat tyre stopped his run short. A borrowed tyre assisted him in completing the 4th heat.
Andrew Keays pulled out the Roo Jumper for the weekend, he was assisted by Craig Funston who was navigating for his navigator. Unfortunately the volkswagon motor dropped a valve and it was day over for the boys.
After overcoming a wobbling steering wheel in the first heat David & Alice Middlemiss had a good run in the second heat only to find a leaking rear main seal in the engine. The last 2 heats were completed with additional oil each time they went out.
A great event had by all in attendance, a very big thank-you to all those who were apart of organising the day.
Let’s try and spread the word about the event, it is always a good days racing and if anyone has any ideas on innovative new race formats (to use the facilities more, etc) please let the club know.

3. 15-04-2010 -: Donald 2010 Race Report

The GORBA club are off and racing again in 2010. The crews of Fox (705), Funston (243) and Middlemiss (277) headed to Donald for the Easter Long Weekend.
The Fox team were the only crew to successfully finish the event. Although this can be questioned with Andy making Karen very car sick on Saturday, changing navi\'s to Craig Funston on the Sunday morning to then end up coming back with panel damage on the front and rear end. They had an incident with some trees that just jumped onto the track! The damage was straightened out with a car winch and Andy was right to go out for the afternoon session with yet another navigator (this time Jason East).
The Funston crew unveiled the refreshed outlaw buggy that has had some TLC in the past 12 months. The new orange paint job wasn\'t to see too many race km\'s though, as the engine destroyed a bearing in the prologue recon ending the boys weekend in the buggy. Both driver and navi thoroughly enjoyed their race km\'s with Andy in his Patrol (it certainly opened their eyes as to what the 2 tonne Patrol can do on a race track compared with a buggy).
The Middlemiss team prologued 18th and 3rd in class in a great start to the weekend. It wasn\'t to be though, the ever reliable 20 valve succomb to engine dramas after a hit to the sump (causing a hole). It was race over and David & Alice became spectators on the side of the dusty but exciting race track.

Outright results: 1st Glen Owen, 2nd Greg Gartner, 3rd Peter Sibson

Both the Middlemiss and Funston crews are looking forward to doing some race km\'s at the Avalon event on May 1 to sort out refreshed motors and to give the cars a run before Sea Lake in June. Looking forward to seeing a great turnout at Avalon, lets all go racing in 2010!

Carol Slade & Ian Middlemiss got plenty of photos and footage from the weekend, stay tuned they will be uploaded soon.

6. 08-09-2009 -: Pines Enduro (Millicent) Report

Three and a half entries from the GORBA club made the trek across to South Australia to enter the Pines Enduro at Millicent (Jason Corless (13), David Middlemiss (277), Travis Conrad (206) & Andy Fox (navigating in 809)

Jason Corless & Paul Ward had a trouble free run all weekend. On Saturday they prologued 24th out of 83 entries. Their good run continued on Sunday with 6 fairly consistent laps, and total time of 04:29:20.82 meant that they finished 8th outright. An awesome result for the green machine’s first outing at a National.

Andy Fox had a ride in the navigator’s seat with Russell Cairns in the 809 Owen Patrol. Despite loosing a front panel and two spare tyres out of the back they managed to bring the car home in 16th place outright (total time 05:07:37.27).

David Middlemiss & Ian Middlemiss put a show on for the crowd on Saturday; they managed to roll 277 directly in front of the spectator area. It was a gentle rollover, with only the mirrors damaged and a bit of paint. Sunday was a better day, they finished all the 6 laps finishing 2nd in class and 29th outright in a total time of 05:42:00.67.

Travis Conrad & Gary Conrad set themselves up for a great race weekend, prologuing 3rd in class, and 42nd outright. They took part in the Dash for Cash for Super 1650 buggies and finished 2nd behind Matt Owen. Sunday started out to be a great event for the 206 entry, they finished the first 4 laps of the event making them 3rd in class at the 2nd service break. In the 5th lap a tree brought an abrupt halt to their day. The buggy is a little worse for wear and Gary has a sore ankle but is generally ok.

7. 23-08-2009 -: GORBA Moyston - Rd 4 Mallee Shield

GORBA Moyston - Round 4 Mallee Shield Inter Club Challenge
Supported by Lavor Wash
Beautiful weather greeted the 32 entrants at the Moyston Mallee Shield recently. With plenty of rain leading up to the event and the work behind the scenes on the track by GORBA members in the last 12 months competitors were set for a good days racing. The days racing consisted of 2 groups undertaking 3 heats, each 7 laps long of the 5km course.

The early pace was set by Peter Sibson & Jason Munro in the 435 Baja entry, closely followed by the single seat entry of Ian Edelstein (191) in the first heat.
Daryl Pearce & Brandon Pearce while pushing hard on a fast section had a moment resulting in a gentle rollover in the 2212 entry; this brought the end to the days racing.
In a tight slippery part of the track Michael Hannan & Steve Crowe had a close encounter with a tree, and the 149 car came to an abrupt stop.
It must be noted that in both of the above instances that no-one was injured.
Steve Moore & Dean Mott (177) were travelling along nicely, enjoying racing again, until Dean succumb to a back injury. We can report that after his visits to the Ararat & Ballarat Hospitals that he is home and recovering well.

In the second heat Stephen Collett & Ross Doering (435) were setting the quick pace, followed closely by Ian Edelstein (191) and Bernie Clohesy & Kim Stacey (570). These 3 cars were within 7 seconds of one another.
An early departure in this heat was the pace setter from heat one; Peter Sibson & Jason Munro broke a link pin ending their day.
Andy & Karen Fox in the Production 4WDPatrol (705) almost did a repeat of Moyston last year. A deflating tyre caused them to leave the track and damaged the steering and front end. Unlike last year, they were able to fix the Patrol with assistance from a local who supplied some parts and then were able to drive home (not requiring a tilt tray back to Geelong).
Ken Holt & Jeremy Holt (258) while running 5th in class at the beginning of the second heat were pushing hard in the Raptor only to succumb to engine gremlins bringing the day to an end.
Rags McClelland & Peter Robinson (222) were running 2nd in class duelling for class outright honours with Mark Hubbard & Nathan Hubbard (298) when their Raptor also succumb to engine dramas.
Craig Dixon & Rod Knight (76) were out there having a great race day, circulating well keeping everyone honest. However at the end of the heat they noticed gearbox dramas and it was the day over.
On completion of the second heat, Mark Hubbard & Nathan Hubbard (298) found some stray structural weaknesses in their new southern cross. A disappointing end to a great drive all day.

Bernie Clohesy & Kim Stacey (570), Ian Edelstein (191), Stephen Collett & Ross Doering (435) & David Middlemiss & Alice Slade (277) were left to battle it out for outright positions in the third heat.
The 535 entry of Dean Bennett & Tanya Fisher in the Datsun 1600 drove hard all day dishing it out to the little car but unluckily failed to finish after losing the rear wheel in the last laps of the last heat (however they were classed as a finisher because they completed 70% of the race distance).
Andrew Keays & Jason Bruty (281) put in a great effort in only Andrew’s second race in the Roo Jumper, he is coming to grips with off road racing very quickly in the buggy that his dad used to race 30 years ago.
Viv Simmons & Nic Simmons (256) were lucky to keep their wheels in the last heat; they finished with only 2 wheel nuts on a very loose rear wheel. A very consistent drive all day, and it appeared that they were very happy with the new power plant.
Bernie Clohesy & Kim Stacey (570) & Stephen Collett & Ross Doering (435) fought hard all day swapping positions and really pushing each other. However with a very consistent drive all day Ian Edelstein (191) was triumphant.

1st outright (1st in Pro light Buggy) – Ian Edelstein (191)
2nd outright (1st in Performance 2WD) – Bernie Clohesy & Kim Stacey (570)
3rd outright (1st in Extreme 2WD) – Stephen Collett & Ross Doering (435)
4th outright (1st in Super 1650 Buggy) – David Middlemiss & Alice Slade (277)
5th outright (1st in Sportsman Buggy) – Ron Taylor & Andrew Scott (388)
7th outright (1st in Pro Buggy) – Alan Amos & John Amos (9)

Best presented Award – David Larson & Mark Skate (294)
A kind donation of a pressure washer for the second year running by Greg Clark of Lavor Wash.

Bright Spark Award – Andrew Jennings & Ian Middlemiss (252)
AJ managed to find a way of not completing the reconnaissance lap, requiring a tow signalling the end of the day before it even began.

Please find attached results from the event.

8. 20-07-2009 -: Waikerie Enduro Race Report

A contingent of 5 GORBA teams made the trek across to South Australia to enter the Hi-Tec Oils Waikerie Enduro. The weekend started off with rain during scrutineering (and while some teams set up camp) on Friday. The Middlemiss crew (or close to being the Middlemiss crew) made a beeline straight back to their trailer, while others (not to mention any names Dicko & Rod) ended up with fairly wet seats – putting cars on display is not all that it is cracked up to be in the rain!

The 76 crew of Dicko & Rod were the quickest in the prologue from the GORBA crew. It was later revealed that the reason for this was because Dicko was wearing his old race suit, and it was so tight that he could only take one breath, meaning he had to do a quick time in order to get out of it! Jas & Wardy were setting themselves up for a good time until the towel was pulled from beneath them, facing them in the wrong direction. Stoddart & Clarkey performed well in the prologue, and were really looking forward to how the modifications to the buggy faired on race day. AJ & Ian were down on power in the prologue, but they traced in down to a problem with the alternator and replaced it ready for a day of racing. The 277 team had a slipping clutch off the line, but made it around, and made adjustments for race day.

Dicko and Rod were too interested in making conversation with the locals to seriously race on Sunday, a whisper was they had a problem with a head gasket on lap one but they managed to sweet talk some cool water to enable them to complete the lap before retiring for the day. After a strong start the Purgatory Racing team succumb to engine gremlins approximately 60km’s around the first lap. AJ & Ian succumb to electrical gremlins on completion of the second lap which signalled day end. They did however have front row seats for the crash of the day, a car launched off a dune beside them, landing on its nose and cartwheeling through the top of a tree, and re-appearing on the other side. A very lucky navigator, with a substantial amount of damage to the car. David & Alice had an incident with some wire (that some inconsiderate person left on the track). They managed to carry the wire ¾ lap before it wrapped itself around the left axle and cv’s – destroying the lot. Luckily the pit crew weren’t too far away, once the wire was removed!!! New cv’s were fitted and they were able to complete lap 2. However the wire took hold good and proper damaging the bearing in their 3rd lap, so it was day over and recovery for the second time.

The only team to finish the race from Geelong was the #15 entry of Jason and Wardy. They had a very consistent day working their way through the field, this was the first long course race in the buggy, a great effort to finish such a gruelling event, overall they finished 6th outright and 4th in class.

Overall a good weekend was had by all, a great campsite at the track meaning everyone was amongst the action all the time.

Results are attached.

11. 14-05-2009 -: GORBA Multi Club Avalon Race Report

The day started out with misty rain and with hope that there would be less dust then normal. Brooke was able to say that the track would be without dust for at least the first couple of laps! There was an impressive turnout at the event, with 13 entries.

Jason Corless unveiled the Kawasaki green rimco entry (15) for the first time. This great looking buggy sported a Mitsubishi Evo 7 motor. It was great to see Jason out there on the race track after at least three years spent in the shed revamping his buggy.

Another vehicle to be unveiled after many years in the shed was the 281 entry of Andrew Keays and Paul Johnson. The Roo Jumper originally raced and built by Andrew’s father Clive in the 70’s. Its log book certainly makes for some historical reading, and it’s great to see another second generation racer out there on the tracks.

The 3rd vehicle to be unveiled at the weekend was the 497 entry of Des Harrington in the Ivan Stewart Pro Truck.

The race was to consist of 2 groups, who would each undertake 4 heats of 7 laps. The tin tops headed out first in the aim to disperse some of the mud puddles that had formed on the track.

Unfortunately in heat 2 the entry of Steve Moore and Dean Mott found that it wasn’t too fun of a ride when there was little to no oil in the rear shockers, it was certainly a very rocky ride.

AJ managed to have some great starts off the line, but unfortunately in the 3rd heat the 252 entry succumb to some gearbox grumbles putting an end to the day.

The 705 entry of Andy & Karen Fox looked very different from past races. With some work completed on the patrol in the off-season it is sporting a new shell. The green colour is certainly different from the white; however watch out for the promotional skins that will be on the sides in the near future. The Fox crew had a few fuel pump issues, with the patrol consistently blowing the fuses. However the reason that they didn’t go out for the last heat was due to a split in the brake lines. Andy & Karen’s story of the drive home (Andy in the patrol and Karen following behind) sounds quite interesting with the use of the handbrake and 4wd. Would have been quite a sight to see the patrol pulling up to lights on the way through Geelong with the back wheels locked up! The crazy people who drive their race car to the event!

Dean Bennett found that the track was very rough and quite low in places, which required some work between heats to ensure that the 535 entry would make it to the finish line.

In the family competition of the day, Richard Harrington got one on his father Des, beating the Ivan Stewart Pro Truck in the Trekka by just over 28 seconds.

The track conditions lent itself to some very close racing conditions, some entertainment for the crowd was the competiveness between Dicko & Rod (76), Steve & Dean (177) and David & Alice (277). And it has to be said that Dicko was certainly the culprit of the wayward tyres – Moorey was in the centre of the track, and Dicko was off the track so it was certainly Dicko spraying tyres.

It also must be pointed out that it was great to see the 277 entry finish the race this time, unlike at Donald there was plenty of fuel in the buggy.

1st outright – Jason Corless & Paul Ward (15)

2nd outright – Peter Sibson & Jason Munro (412)

3rd outright – David Middlemiss & Alice Slade (277)

Please find attached the results for the day.

Keep an eye out on the gallery page, some photos of the event will be added shortly.

19. 29-01-2009 -: Victorian Off Road Awards Dinner

Hi all,

Please find attached flyer for the Victorian Off Road Awards Dinner to be held in Sea Lake on 14th March, 2009.
This awards dinner is usually held in Melbourne at a fairly high price and in conjunction with other disciplines of motor sport.  (Anyone that has been to the one in Melbourne will know that Off Roading doesn't get much of a look in!!) So, this year, off roading is going at it alone.

It would be great if you could make the effort to attend the evening to congratulate and support the trophy winners from each championship that you have been a part of in 2008.

See you in Sea Lake on the 14th!!

Regards,

Alison McClelland

23. 08-01-2009 -: Portland Sand Dune Report

Once again many GORBA members had their annual pilgrimage to Discovery Bay to visit the Sand Dunes over the Christmas break.

·         Dicko enjoyed the time with no problems in the buggy, yet it is apparent to point out that he didn’t do much driving due to sitting to the navigator’s seat with his grandson’s Zane & Gage in the driver’s seat. Many newcomers quite enjoyed the ‘Zane Circuit’ on the sand. We look forward to seeing Gage out there next year.

·         AJ this year had more attempts at the wall, but still managed to visit the shrubbery (no damage though!) He did however do a great job leading the newcomers until succumbing to engine troubles. His buggy then became the donor buggy….loosing many parts to extend others fun on the dunes. Many thanks AJ.

·         Dean had a good start to the week and was enjoying having a buggy down there once again. A gremlin in the steering box could have ended his run prematurely but thanks to AJ he got going again. Not for long though…he managed to break an axle (navigator side) while showing Craig Funston the upsides of having a turbo! This required recovery from the bowl by the red Patrol of Don Cottee.

·         Craig Funston along with Dave Middlemiss had trouble adjusting to ‘Dicko’s Portland Pace’. It was said that the newbies were quite keen to get out there! Craig enjoyed the week of getting rid of some gremlins in his new buggy, but eventually had to put it on the trailer on three wheels. Craig has some big plans for his buggy in the off season; look out for it in 2009!

·         Dave Middlemiss had a great first time down on the dunes, adjusting to Portland pace seemed difficult at the start, but towards the end of the week really kicked in! His buggy did well on the sand, only to succumb to a steering problem which resulted in it being parked. It must also be mentioned that Dave & Alice are now engaged.

Overall a great week or so was had by all, with Dicko & Merryn holding the fort as we all left to return to work! Wouldn’t it be nice to be retired and be able to stay…

A few newbies visited this year and had an absolute ball, encouraging all members to make this pilgrimage as it is great for drivers, navigators and families to have a well deserved break.

25. 08-01-2009 -: Test & Try

A successful Test & Try Day was held at the Avalon Track on Saturday 6th December. The day was held in conjunction with the Western District Car Club which ran the auto cross track.

Some buggies that we in attendance included: Andrew Jennings, Craig Funston, Craig Dickson, Dean Mott, David Middlemiss, Andrew Keays, Travis Conrad, Roy Lawrence, Scott Fiskes, Steve Moore and Mark Deacon.

Of the auto cross attendees, some that we know included: Dean Bennett, Richard McNay and Jason East.

It was great to see so many cars at this fun event, with some cars being resurrected out of sheds! Looking forward to seeing these cars on racetracks in 2009.

Following this was the GORBA Christmas Party at the Morefield Estate. A list of award recipients will be available shortly.

26. 22-09-2008 -: Tyrell Downs Mallee Shield

A very dusty but highly enjoyable track greated the competitors for the Sea lake Mallee Shield. More information will be available when the results are published. However we can say that David Middlemiss and Alice Slade recieved a trophy for 3rd in Class two. Andrew Stoddart & Chris Clarke finished despite a slipping clutch and some fancy fence work. The Ararat crew Brian & Adam Kent finished (I think) however Kevtam racing turned their engine into a baby rattle and Dicko and Rod were scared off by the fact the Purgatory boys were back on the track (most of the time). More info soon. PS if anyone has photos send them in so they can be put on the site.

27. 22-09-2008 -: Good News

The Australian Institute of Motor Sports Safety (AIMSS) has announced that current FIA belts rated for 5 years will now remain servicable for 10 years for non international events. They are now also planning to test the 2 year SIF belts that many of us use to see if their longevity can also be increased without compromising safety. More information can be found at offroadracing.com.au or at the cams website cams.com.au or www.aimss.com.au

28. 14-09-2008 -: Test & Try

The Geelong Off Road Club is applying to hold a test and try day at Avalon on December the 6th. More details to follow later in the year.

29. 14-09-2008 -: Engine Test Ok

Purgatory Racing is on the way to Sea Lake after a succesful running in test of their new motor on Saturday.

31. 10-09-2008 -: Rumours

It has been noted recently that the boys from Purgatory racing have finally swaped the hospital ward for the race track with a long awaited return for the Sea Lake event. Both driver and navigator have swaped the hospital gowns for their race suits, rebuilt themselves and their race engine and look out Dicko here they come.

It was not the result our club members had wanted at the Pines last weekend. Both the Middlemiss boys and Glenn Owen & Deon Beatie have some repair work to be done before the next race. Unfortunatly gearbox problems in both  their buggys led to an early exit on race day. It was heavy going with only 23 starters out of 69 able to finish. All the details are available at www.offroadracing.com.au

34. 10-09-2008 -: Sea Lake Tour

The Sea lake Off Road Club is once again offering a chance to look around lake Tyrell on Sunday the 21st September. See the flyer for details. This is a great chance to have a slow look at the track and its scenery without the hassle of having to pass Dicko. It is a great chance to show family and friends the race track. Thanks to the Sea lake club and landowners for making this possible.
